On the Marcopolo Trail
The ancient Silk route not only served as the through-fare connecting China's hinterland with its western region but also help to promote political, economic and cultural exchange between China and the countries in the west. The Silk Route used to be an international trade route through which the Chinese silk was exported.

The ancient Silk Route started from Xian, China, after passed through, the Hexi Corridor, into Xinjiang. It was divided into main routes. The northern route started from Dunhuang, rambled along the north foothill of Tian-Shan Mountains, to the Ili River and westwards to Black Sea. The central route meandered west along the southern foot of Tian-Shan Mountains, crossed Loulan, Turpan, the Pamirs and then towards southwest. The southern route ran west along the southern foot of Takla Makhand Desert, passed through Hotan, Yarkand, went over the Pamirs, across over the Northern Areas of Pakistan and led to the west. The ancient Silk Route has a history of more than 2000 years so far.
